Twenty kilometers from Granada is Laguna De Apoyo Nature Reserve. 6.6 kilometers in diameter, 175 metre deep, this beautiful lake is nestled the caldera of an extinct volcano and surrounded by a lush, tropical dry forest eco-system.

Apparently the laguna was formed about 23,000 years ago. A caldera is a fancy way of saying a hole that was created by a volcanic eruption. The water level has dropped about 10 metres in the passed 30 years.

There is a crazy variety of flora and fauna around the lake; various monkeys, opossums, anteaters, jaguars, pythons and lizards. Also, over 200 different butterflies have been catalogued.

The water temperature in the dry season (December to April) ranges from about 24 degrees Celsius to 28 Degrees and it differs by a few degrees in the rainy season.

The Best Way to Experience It

Paradiso Hostel, Bar and Restaurant enjoys the primo spot on the shores of the Laguna. You can catch a taxi there and hang out all day by purchasing a $7 USD day pass or you can catch a bus from the Oasis Hostel in Granada. We went there twice as we loved it so much. The second time we stayed the night so we could enjoy two full days floating around. Staying the night also means you can score a good spot in the shade!

The day pass entitles you to use of kayaks, inner tube floaties and deck chairs. You can also hire paddle boards. The restaurant and bar have great food, prices are reasonable and the staff are awesome.

This place will make all of your cares go away. So much so that you just don’t want to leave. That’s why, on our second visit, we booked a room. Our biggest issue with this Laguna is that we had to leave. It’s a tough life.

Where We Stayed

We loved our one night stay at Paradiso Hostel. Breakfast is included and they have a great menu to choose from. Our room was spacious, immaculately clean and tucked away up from the Laguna. The staff here are amazing and we recommend staying the night to really enjoy this special spot.
